If you booted up your PC to play a match and Riot Vanguard hit you with the VAN 9001 or VAL 9001 restriction, it means Riot’s anti-cheat system requires a hardware-level security feature called TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot to be enabled on your motherboard. Modern competitive games enforce this to keep hackers out, but standard Windows updates often mess with these BIOS settings.
Follow these steps to get back into the game:
1. Enter Your PC’s BIOS/UEFI: Restart your computer and repeatedly press the key specified for your motherboard brand (F2, Delete, or F12) during the startup screen until you enter the BIOS settings page.
2. Enable Secure Boot: Look for the Security or Boot tab. Locate Secure Boot and switch it from Disabled to Enabled. (Note: If it’s greyed out, you may need to clear or generate default Secure Boot keys first).
3. Activate TPM 2.0: Navigate to the Advanced or CPU Configuration tab. Find Intel Platform Trust Technology (PTT) if you have an Intel CPU, or AMD fTPM if you’re on Ryzen. Enable it.
4. Save and Reboot: Press F10 to save changes and exit. Once Windows boots back up, open the Riot Client, and the error will be gone.
